Ovarian cysts.
12/17/2009
21-year-old female with IUP and left adnexal mass which is suspected for torsion.
Gross: The specimen consists of a 17 x 14 x 6.5 cm. intact ovarian cyst weighing 979 gm. Opening the cyst reveals a large amount of clear mucinous fluid. The inner cystic wall is largely smooth with no evidence of protruding or polypoid lesions. A proton of the cystic wall is edematous and thickened. The thickness of cystic wall ranges from 0.2 to 2 cm.
Micro: Sections through the cystic wall show uniform columnar mucinous cystic epithelial lining with no evidence of cellular atypia. Vascular congestion and patchy fibrosis are present in the cystic wall. The residual ovarian parenchyma (thickened cystic wall) is largely edematous with a few scattered hilus cells. There is no evidence of invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma. H&E stain.
