Breast cancer.
California Hospital Medical Center
53-year-old female with left breast cancer.
Procedure: Mastectomy.
Micro: see photos (4X to 40X). H & E stain.
A very rare type of breast cancer, only one reported case in a cytology journal. However, this is a surgical pathology case. What is your diagnosis?
Diagnosis:
Mucious/colloid carcinoma, type A (paucicellular type), with abundent psammoma bodies.
Discussion:
Microcalcification can be observed in benign and malignant breast lesions, but psammoma bodies (PBs) are rarely reported in breast lesions and are a feature of papillary neoplasms. However, here we have observed PBs in large numbers in a mucinous carcinoma of breast, which is only previously reported in a case report of FNA cytology of breast lesion (see reference). In summary, this is a reportable case of mucinous carcinoma of the breast with abundant PBs.
