70-year-old smoker with a right hilar mass, about 7 cm. in size.
Procedure: CT guided right hilar mass needle biopsy.
Gross: The specimen consists of multiple tan, irregular, cylindrical needle core biopsy tissue fragments measuring 0.2 to 0.8 cm. in length, with an average diameter of 0.1 cm. All submitted.
Micro: Sections show cores of tumor tissue with extensive tumor necrosis and infiltration of mixed acute and chronic inflammatory cells. A few scattered viable tumor cells are noted. The tumor cells are hyperchromatic with relatively high N/C ratio, smudged chromatin, intranuclear inclusions, and moderate amounts of pink cytoplasm. H & E stain
