65-year-old male with left orbital/conjunctival tumor.

Procedure: excisional biopsy.

Gross: The specimen consists of a tan membranous tissue fragment measuring 1.2 x 0.8 x 0.2 cm. A portion of the specimen is used for intraoperative frozen section consultation. The frozen section remainder and the rest of the tissue are then fixed in formalin. The specimen is further sectioned. All submitted.

Micro: Sections show conjunctival tissue with patchy proliferation of squamous papilloma. The squamous papilloma is lined by layers of reactive/atypical squamous epithelium with central fibrovascular cores. Diffuse infiltration of inflammatory cells are noted in the conjunctival lining and squamous papilloma. The submucosal tissue exhibits patchy chronic inflammation, extensive solar elastosis, and areas of calcifications. There is no evidence of invasive squamous cell carcinoma. The uninvolved conjunctival mucosa is lined by pseudostratified squamous epithelium with a few scattered goblet cells. The resection margin is negative for tumor involvement. H & E stain.
